The browser without much surprise is my most used app on my Macbook Pro, of course I always want to use the best one on any platform I use. I will also post a similar article for Windows at some later point. And I know what many of you will say now, Chrome is the best without any doubt but I don't agree for a few reasons I will get to later but I'm also gonna keep this really short and only talk about what's really important. I will get into the 4 most popular ones, I guess 3 would be enough, I mean Safari, Chrome and Firefox but I'm also quickly gonna mention Opera just for the sake of it.
Chrome
Best Browsers For Macbook
I guess it recently is the most popular one around for a few good reasons. Best sync cross-platform would be one important factor and the Chrome Apps store would be the 2nd one. But for me that's pretty much it. My gripes though are terrible ram management, even without the use of any add ons at all Chrome already uses up way to much ram but once you run a few of them things almost get pathetic. But you could say, it uses a lot ram, who cares? And you are not that wrong but it's not just that this also puts more stress on the CPU which ends in more battery consumption and that's my main gripe. It kills my battery like no other one. Doing a live hangout with Chrome will end up causing your Macbook to go full force on the fans and my battery drain is at about 1%/m, yes correct, this would drain your whole Macbook in about 1.5h which is simply ridiculous and why I stopped using it for live hangouts once and for all. In terms of performance it's quite satisfying and smooth but ram and battery consumption led me to stop using it as my default browser on the mac especially if I want more than just an acceptable battery life. With better battery life I would consider switching back though but I will also still continue using it from time to time because of the sync option.
Opera
I will make it quick, if it would be more like its Windows counterpart in terms of battery and ram consumption it would compete with my current default browser but as it is for now the downsides can't make up for it. Also performance isn't really the best, where it's easily the 2nd best performing browser on Windows it just sits somewhere in the middle on MacOS.
Firefox
This would be by far my most favorite browser if it wouldn't be for the overall sub-par performance. The amount of immensely useful add ons is what keeps it being my default browser for years now on my desktop PC. But that one has all the power it needs and doesn't rely on a battery which is the next thing that bothers me. Battery consumption it's about on Chrome-level what means, just not acceptable if you want good battery life. I would maybe accept the sub-par smooth performance if the battery life would be on par with the best browser in the battery life segment but it's just not.
Safari
Macbook Pro Cheap Price
Simply put, as for right now it's the only acceptable browser to use for me once relying on the battery. It doesn't really have any great features for me, no add ons, no sync I could take advantage of or anything like that. What speaks for it, is the super smooth performance and it's superiority in battery consumption. I am able to get about 2h more of use out of my Macbook by running Safari instead of any of the others and that's pretty much the sole reason why it just recently became my new default browser but I have to add, this only is the case if I'm running on battery. If I'm in my studio or simply using it plugged in to the charger I switch to either Firefox or Chrome.
So to sum things up, who's the winner?
I can't just call one overall winner, I have to separate between using it on battery or plugged in here,so… on battery 1. Safari (provides by far the best battery life, not much else besides that going for it though) 2. Chrome (solid overall still) 3. Firefox (less smooth scrolling performance compared to Chrome costs it the 2nd place) 4. Opera (would be 2nd if more like the Windows version) plugged in 1. Chrome (mostly 1st before FF because of the smoother scrolling) 2. Firefox (with performance on Chrome-level it would be 1st) 3. Safari (if battery life isn't a factor anymore, there's not going a lot for Safari anymore) 4. Opera (weak performance and not much else offering compared to competition) So in the end Safari wins as long as I'm on battery but only because of the better battery life and smooth performance, lack of any add ons is a big bummer though. As long as plugged in Chrome takes the win overall even though just slightly ahead of Firefox due to the slightly smoother scrolling but if that's not as important for you FF is a more than legit runner-up. All my observations had been made on using the Macbook Pro 13 retina with the i5, I can't speak for anything more performant like the Macbook Pro 15. Maybe the difference between Chrome and Firefox is less noticeable what then most probably would make that no.1 for me then. What's your opinion? what's your favorite and why?
